About Elimax® products or treatments
Why can I still see nits after an Elimax® treatment?

When lice lay eggs, they stick them to your hair with a kind of glue. The glue is so strong that empty or dead nits stick to the hair. It is impossible to tell with the naked eye whether a nit is dead. It is best to check the hair again 7 days after treatment. Any nits you may have overlooked will have become young lice at that point, so they will be easier to spot.

Does Elimax® have side effects or can it cause irritation?

Lice can be quite irritating. So you don't want your lice remedy to add to your troubles. Fortunately, Elimax® usually has no side effects.

Limited side effects

Most people do not experience any side effects from Elimax®. When side effects do occur, they are usually minor.

Possible effects are:

  • scalp irritation
  • itching and irritation around the eyes
  • red scalp, neck or ears

Always rinse the shampoo or lotion thoroughly and avoid contact with the eyes.

As a general precaution, we ask pregnant and breastfeeding women to contact their doctor or pharmacist before using the product.

Can head lice become resistant to Elimax®?

Elimax® works biomechanically, without insecticides, so lice cannot become resistant to its ingredients. Things that may cause treatment to fail include:

  • a misdiagnosis
  • failure to follow instructions (not enough product, treatment not continued for long enough, too few lice and eggs removed with comb, etc.)
  • infestation or return from untreated classmates or family members
  • no check-up 7 days after initial treatment with repeat treatment if necessary
Can I use normal shampoo after treatment with Elimax®?

That depends on whether you use Elimax® Ultra Power Lotion or Elimax® Shampoo. If you use Elimax® Ultra Power Lotion, you should still wash your hair with normal shampoo after treatment. The lotion kills lice and nits and keeps new lice away, but it does not wash your hair. If you use Elimax® Shampoo, your hair is also being washed at the same time.

What should I do if I see lice again after treatment with Elimax®?

After treatment with Elimax®, you obviously don't want to find any new nits or lice. But if it does happen, don't panic. You can get rid of those new lice easily.

Why do lice still survive?

Normally, Elimax® smoothly removes all nits and lice from your hair. If you are heavily infested, some eggs may still hatch after the first treatment. These newly-hatched eggs only mature after 10 days. Fortunately, until then the eggs cannot reproduce.

Repeat the treatment

If you notice that there are still nits or lice in your hair, just keep treating your hair until they are all gone.

Everything about lice & nits
Can lice also get into clothes or bedding?

Elimax® makes it easy to get rid of lice from your hair, but can they also crawl into your clothes or bedding? And do you need to clean them?

Lice do not just survive on the scalp

They live mainly in hair, feeding on blood every 3-4 hours and need a humid environment of around 30°C.
In other places, they can survive up to 24 hours, or in the worst case 48 hours.

What do I need to clean?

Lice and nits cannot jump: they only crawl from hair to hair. So do you even need to clean certain items?

Yes. Combs, brushes and towels that you use during treatment do need cleaning. Since lice survive for up to 24 hours on surfaces other than your hair, it is best to wash your sheets, hats and other textiles on at least 60°. Objects you cannot wash are best set aside for at least three days or put in a hermetically sealed plastic bag and placed in a cold environment for 48 hours. If you want a quick solution, you can use the Elimax® Textile and Furniture Spray, which instantly eliminates all lice on surfaces (hats, bedding, upholstery, carseats, etc.)

Do lice always lay their nits in the hair?

Lice start out as lice eggs, also known as nits. These look like grey-white dots and stick to the hair. They are found close to the scalp, often behind the ears and near your neck. Nits are glued to the hair on your head. You won't find them anywhere else on your body.

Get rid of nits

Nits must be removed from your or your children's hair as soon as possible. And it's best to take a preventive approach as well.

Elimax® products kill nits and lice as well as keeping new ones away. Ask your pharmacist about it.

How do you prevent lice and nits?

Lice are nasty: not only do they make you itch a lot, they also spread quickly to other people. So you want to prevent them from settling on your or your children's heads at all costs. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to avoid infestation.

1. Check regularly

Check the whole family regularly for nits and lice. Comb through each lock using a fine lice comb and look particularly carefully behind the ears and on the neck. Afterwards rinse the comb in lukewarm soapy water.

2. .Wear long hair in a ponytail, braid or bun

Does your child have long hair? Then it is a good idea to keep the hair in a ponytail, braid or bun. This way the risk of infestation still exists, but it is significantly reduced.

3. Do not share hair bands, caps, hats, soft toys or towels

With children it’s often difficult to prevent it, but try to teach them not to swap clothes or headwear with each other. Items that are difficult to wash are best put aside for 3 days.

If you want quick relief, you can use the Elimax® Textile and Furniture Spray, which immediately eliminates all lice on surfaces (hats, bedding, upholstery, car seats, etc.)

4. Use a protective lice remedy

With Elimax® you don’t just kill lice and nits, but you also protect yourself against new lice.

My children have lice: will I get any myself?

Lice are no fun. It is often children who suffer worst. But it can happen to adults too, no one is immune. Luckily, though, you can minimise the risks.

Avoid contact

Do your children have lice? That can happen. But it would be a shame for everyone in your family to have to deal with the pests. We therefore recommend avoiding any contact between your hair and your child's.

Aim for prevention

However, avoiding hair contact is not as easy as it seems. After all, you live together under the same roof. The alternative? Treat yourself with Elimax® Preventive shampoo.

How do you get lice?

Lice aren’t just very irritating, they also have negative connotations. However, they can affect anyone. Getting your head close to someone who has lice is enough to get them yourself. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do to keep lice away.

Scarves and hats

Scarves and hats often change hands, especially within the family. However, it’s best to avoid it. Often it is clothing which accelerates an outbreak of lice. Tip: don't hang coats and scarves too close together either. Otherwise, lice can easily move from one to another.

Loose hair

Long, loose hair is most susceptible to lice. Does your child have long hair and is there an outbreak of lice at school? Then it's best to make a ponytail every morning. This significantly reduces the risk of catching them.

What about the comb in the bathroom?

Infestation from items other than clothing, such as a comb, brush or bedding, is rare but possible.

Tip: Elimax® kills nits and lice as well as keeping new bugs away. Ask for it at your pharmacy.

How often should I use Elimax®?

You can use Elimax® as often as you like. Elimax® shampoo in particular can very easily be used to wash your hair repeatedly. Usually one or two treatments will be enough to get rid of the little pests. It can happen that you catch lice again from other people who have not been treated. In that event you can use Elimax® again, without any risk. It will still be as effective as ever. Since Elimax® acts biomechanically, without insecticides, lice cannot become resistant to Elimax®. Using Elimax® shampoo will wash your hair as effectively as a regular shampoo.

How do you know that your child has lice?

Are you worried that your child might be suffering from lice? Don’t worry, it can happen to anyone and they are easy to control. First, of course, you need to check that lice are actually present. Itching is a first sign. Does your child scratch their head frequently? Then check the scalp and dry hair using a lice comb.

Step 1: the lice comb

Important: choose a fine lice comb. Look for lice lock by lock, checking particularly carefully behind the ears and on the neck. That is where lice prefer to lay their eggs.

Step 2: prevent infestation

Have you checked your child thoroughly using the lice comb? Don't forget to rinse the comb afterwards. Use lukewarm soapy water to avoid further infestation.

Step 3: Does your child have lice? Get rid of them!

Did inspection with the lice comb reveal anything? Then deal with them quickly and efficiently. Whether you find eggs or live lice, Elimax® is extremely effective. Do not delay, start treatment quickly, as lice multiply extremely rapidly. Also remember to inform the school of the infestation.

Facts & myths about lice
Nits look like dandruff

Dandruff falls off your head easily. Nits (the eggs of lice) stick to your hair and are difficult to get loose. Found something that doesn't move and sticks in place? Chances are it's a nit.

You can get lice at the hairdresser's

The chances are tiny. Hairdressers disinfect their equipment and monitor hygiene. Lice don't survive long on brushes either. But of course, if you already have lice, they can be noticed there.

Lice are more common in children

True! Children literally sit with their heads close together more often. Lice are quick to make use of that. Children are also more likely to share hats, scarves and other objects in which lice like to linger.

Lice are a sign of poverty

Head lice do not discriminate. They like heads, not wallets. Anyone can get them – rich, poor, short, tall, clean, messy...

Lice don't like clean hair

Nice try. A clean scalp is not a turn-off for lice. They are as happy on freshly washed hair as on a cut with four days of dry shampoo.

You can get lice from pets and other animals

Your cat, dog or guinea pig will not pass on lice. Animals can have lice, but they’re not the same creatures that make our lives miserable. The reverse also applies: you can’t pass on your head lice to your dog or cat.

Lice jump from head to head

No way, lice do not have springs. They crawl. Slowly but purposefully. They are attracted by the static electricity of your hair. In other words, you need hair-hair contact to transfer them. The pests are passed on when heads come close together – during play, while hugging or taking a selfie, or contact with a hat or other headgear in which they hide.

Lice don't like short hair

Short hair may make it more difficult for them, but it is no guarantee for a lice-free head. Even a cool short cut can perfectly easily become a louse hotel.

Lice prefer warm, hairy places

They are most comfortable close to the scalp: nice and warm, moist and full of food (by which we mean blood, yes – sorry).

Boys are less likely to get lice

It is statistically slightly less frequent – boys usually have shorter hair, hug a bit less and thus have less head contact – but it is certainly no guarantee.

You must keep quiet about a lice infestation

No! Just the opposite. Share the news, treat it together and stop them from spreading further. There is nothing to hide at all, because it can just happen to anyone.
